Why is VoIP Replacing PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)? Fiber Optic Communication Tutorial
The history of the traditional PSTN
The traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) has been continuously improving since its inception by Alexander Bell. There are good reasons why PSTN exists in its present condition.
What is Ring-Down
Initially, Bell developed a ring-down circuit, which means no dialing of numbers. Instead, a physical wire connected devices via two phone lines. Just grab the phone and the other person at the other end directly andthere was no ring at all.
Basically, this structure fell flat when more and more users joined the network. Because on this concept, you need a wire between any pair of person who wants to have a call. As more and more customers are combined, this one was mixed mesh network, which was very expensive and difficult to construct and maintain.
The launch of Switch
That was the time when the concept was a switch to play was. Each user requires only one cable for connectionto the central office switch, the switch can then connect the user to other users.
Originally, the switch was manually operated by a telephone operator. The operator connected the caller to whom he wanted to by calling manually connect the voice path.
Later, go to manual work, replaced by electronic switches, the much faster and had much more capacity.
Limitations of PSTN
PSTN has really done a nice job: phone calls, that is, switchinguntil now. With more data traffic than voice traffic over the network, the traditional PSTN network is simply not flexible enough to deal with the new technologies and customer requirements. Here are some simple explanations.
1. Traffic has overtaken voice of vehicles to be. The current status is that traffic actually on top of networks that were built for voice. However, traffic has its own characteristics, which makes it easy not to run efficiently on a voiceNetwork.
The trend in the industry is to build networks with a data-centric approach. Since all traffic including data, voice and video running, you will find on this network.
2. PSTN is not in a position to face new demands of customers. PSTN was designed as a one-company show. Only provider of PSTN equipment can develop applications for these devices. With modern ever-changing requirements, it is simply impossible to meet for a company that all the needs of customers. A more openInfrastructure that can provide many application vendors are not required.
3. Current PSTN can not support data, video and voice products. In the backbone of the PSTN, the convergence of data, voice and video is has been for some time. However, it takes some time to get it for all homes. With high-speed broadband access, like DSL, cable or wireless, is the convergence of data, video and voice on the homepage finally happening.
4. PSTN was not easyDesigned for the implementation of traffic. Since the carrier channels, call control and service logic is firmly bound in a closed platform, it is not possible, smaller changes that could improve the audio quality.
